MADRING becomes the first Formula 1 Grand Prix to introduce on-site biodigesters for organic waste management
Around 4.5 tonnes of organic waste were processed during the event through a pioneering system of ten biodigesters installed across the Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 paddocks and other operational areas
Madrid, 29 September 2026. The FORMULA 1 TAG HEUER GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2026 has become the first Formula 1 Grand Prix to introduce an on-site organic waste treatment system using biodigesters supplied by Lagain Group.
During the event week, ten biodigesters installed across different operational areas at MADRING processed around 4.5 tonnes of organic waste generated by the teams and the Paddock Club. According to data recorded by the equipment while in operation, the system prevented the emission of almost 19 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
The biodigesters were located in the Formula 1 paddock, the Formula 2 and Formula 3 Support Paddock and the Paddock Club area. This made it possible to manage waste at the point where it was generated, reducing the need for transportation and storage prior to disposal at landfill.
The operation was supported by a separate waste collection system using compostable bags distributed throughout the venue, helping to ensure that organic waste was correctly separated at source.
The initiative demonstrated that technology is only one part of the solution. Effective separation at source, staff training and cooperation between all parties involved proved essential to its success. As the event progressed, the different operators became increasingly familiar with the waste separation requirements, leading to a gradual improvement in both the processes and their integration into daily operations.
MADRING has welcomed the results of the initiative and the lessons learned, which will help to further improve its environmental management systems at future editions of the event.
