Antonelli conquers Monaco in a race marked by chaos, a red flag and multiple retirements among the favourites
Andrea Kimi Antonelli reinforced his lead in the World Championship with a commanding victory on the streets of Monte Carlo. The Mercedes driver came through a race filled with incidents, neutralisations and a final standing restart following the red flag triggered by Charles Leclerc’s crash. Lewis Hamilton and Isack Hadjar completed the podium.
Antonelli once again demonstrated that he is enjoying the best spell of his young and rapidly emerging career. The Italian converted Saturday’s pole position into his fifth consecutive win and controlled the race from start to finish at one of the most demanding venues on the calendar. Neither Hamilton’s pressure nor the interruptions disrupted the Mercedes driver’s strategy, as he also became the youngest winner in the history of the Monaco Grand Prix and further extended his lead at the top of the championship standings.
The race entered a completely different phase in its closing stages. First, the safety car was deployed following Lance Stroll’s accident, and shortly afterwards Charles Leclerc hit the barrier while running in podium positions. The impact left debris on track and caused surface damage that forced race control to red-flag the session. The race resumed with a standing start with only a handful of laps remaining — an unprecedented scenario that heightened the tension in the Principality and which Antonelli handled with composure to retain the lead all the way to the chequered flag.
Behind the winner, Hamilton secured a solid second place for Ferrari, while Isack Hadjar completed a well-deserved podium after a highly competitive weekend. Oscar Piastri also delivered a strong result in fourth, while several high-profile names endured a difficult afternoon. Max Verstappen retired on the opening lap due to a power unit failure, Lando Norris pulled out at mid-race with mechanical issues, and Leclerc saw any hopes of success at his home race disappear following his crash. Carlos Sainz was also unable to finish after an incident with Gabriel Bortoleto, while Fernando Alonso salvaged a single point thanks to post-race penalties.
