Antonelli wins again and takes the lead in the Championship
The Japanese Grand Prix held at Suzuka was marked by the Safety Car’s appearance at the perfect moment for the race winner, Kimi Antonelli, who was joined on the podium by Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc.
The race, which featured several contenders for the win, was ultimately won by Kimi Antonelli, who secured his second consecutive victory of the year, joined on the podium by Oscar Piastri, who led much of the race, and Charles Leclerc. The Italian completed another perfect weekend with his second pole and second hat-trick, also becoming the youngest driver ever to lead the championship.
The race began with a great start from Piastri, who moved into the lead within the opening metres, while Antonelli dropped to sixth after wheelspin. Behind them, Russell, who had also suffered a poor start, recovered positions until placing himself behind the McLaren, though without finding a clear chance to overtake. Everything changed on lap 32, when Oliver Bearman’s heavy crash—while trying to avoid Franco Colapinto, who was going very slowly due to low battery energy—triggered the Safety Car. At that moment, Antonelli, who had extended his stint longer than the others, was fully rewarded: he was able to make his pit stop at the perfect time, rejoin as leader and snatch first place from Piastri after the restart.
From there, the fight for the podium was constant. Piastri delivered his best performance of the year in the first race he managed to finish this season, with enough pace to have fought for the win had the Safety Car not intervened, while Leclerc secured third place after resisting pressure from Russell for many laps — a defence that offers encouraging signs for the Italian team ahead of the upcoming races.
The Spaniards remain far behind
From a Spanish perspective, Carlos Sainz Jr. finished in 15th place, ahead of his teammate, in an unusual race for Williams marked by Alex Albon’s five pit stops. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso completed his first race of the season in 18th position, showing improvement for the Aston Martin F1 Team after the vibration issues of the early rounds.
